Dinosaur Isle - Traverse Long Lost Periods At The Isle Of Wight
Dinosaur Isle in the Isle of Wight is The UK's first purpose built dinosaur museum and tourist attraction. The Island's diverse geology features a wealth of fossils that tells much about the past and gives hints to the effects of possible future ecological changes.
Dating from around 126 million in years past, dinosaur age fossils in the Isle of Wight are probably the best throughout Europe. You will discover a wide array of younger rocks that depict clear records of ancient animal life in the isle, rivers and marine environments. Likewise, the isle also exhibits an abundant record of pre-historic plant life.
These pre-historic remnants and records were previously encased in the Museum of Isle of Wight geology for nearly a hundred years. On August 10th 2001 this was transformed along with the launching of Dinosaur Isle, an interactive museum that replaced the old gallery. With wider space and substantially upgraded facilities, Dinosaur Isle museum shows a wider display of the abundant geological collections unique to this isle. The new museum was designed by hometown architects in the shape of a giant pterodactyl and houses all kinds of things from showcases to rock re-constructions to full sized fleshed dinosaurs!
